High Systolic Blood Pressure – Causes and Treatment

According to National Heart Lung Blood Institute, high systolic blood pressure is also known as isolated systolic hypertension. This ailment is most commonly found in people who are above the age of 60 years.

Isolated systolic hypertension: It is a form of essential hypertension where systolic blood pressure elevates. Medications and other substances:  In an article issued under ‘Integrated Blood Pressure Control’ which was published in July 2009 by Drs. Jennifer frank and David Sommerfeld stressed on the fact that number of illicit drugs, prescription medications and over-the-counter medications can cause high systolic blood pressure.

A name of some common drugs that causes high blood pressure also includes non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, stimulant medications and oral contraceptive pills. Factors like smoking tobacco and alcohol intake also results into high blood pressure.

Essential hypertension:  Essential hypertension which is also known as primary or idiopathic hypertension is one of the main causes of high systolic pressure. It has been estimated that 95% of people suffering from hypertension also suffers from high systolic blood pressure.

Medical diagnosis:  “People having other types of diseases and medical conditions can also suffer from high systolic blood pressure”, according to the Seventh Report of the Joint National Commission on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure. This report was published in May 2003 issue of the ‘Journal of the American Medical Association’.

All those who suffer from ailments like primary aldosteronism, thyroid disease, chronic kidney disease, contraction of the aorta, obstructive sleep apnea, pheochromocytoma and parathyroid disease are at higher risk of developing high blood pressure in their body.

There are some effective remedies that can help in preventing or dealing with high systolic blood pressure. They are as follows:

  • Eating healthy food is one of the most important treatment programs to lower down your blood pressure. Include lots of vegetables, fruits in your duet. Limit the intake of cholesterol and fat rich food items. Also reduce amount of sodium in your diet. Stay away from alcohol and tobacco and eat potassium rich food items.
  • People who are overweight are at higher risk of blood pressure, so it’s essential to maintain a healthy body weight. Losing 10 pounds can help magically in lowering your blood pressure. “Losing weight will reduce the strain on your heart, and often weight loss will cause your blood pressure to drop.” according to American Heart Association.
